First Aid and Safety of Burns

Burns
Burns
Scales burns from hot water and other liquids are the most common burns in early childhood. Because burns range from mild to life threatining, some can be treated at home, while others need emergency medical care.
What to Do?
If a child is severely burned, call 911 right away. While you wait for help, begin these treatments:
  • Remove clothing from the burned areas, except clothing stuck to the skin.
  • Run cool (not cold) water over the burn until the pain lessens.
  • Lightly apply a gauze bandage.
  • If the child is awake and alert, offer ibuprofin or acetaminophen for pain.
  • Do not put any ointments, butter, or other remedies on the burn - these can make the burn worse.
  • Do not break blisters that have formed.

Seek Emergency Medical Care if:

  • The burned is large (cover the area with a clean, soft cloth or towel).
  • The burns came from a fire, an electrical wire or socket, or chemicals.
  • The burn on the face, hands, feet, joints, or genitals.
  • The burn looks infected (with swellin, pus, or increasing redness or red streaking of the skin near the wound).

Think Prevention!

  • Be careful when using candles, space heaters, and curling irons.
  • Keep children away from radiators.
  • Be alert around hot drinks.
  • Check the temperature of bath water before putting a child in the tub.
  • Check smoke alarm batteries at least once a month.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
  • Do not allow young children to play in the kitchen while someone is cooking.

First Aid and Safety of Broken Bones

Broken Bones
Broken Bones
Broken bones (or fractures) are a common injury in kids, especially after a fall. No matter what part may be broken or how big or small the injury may seem, all broken bones need medical care.

Signs and Symptoms
The child may have a broken bone if:
  • you heard a "snap" or a grinding noise during an injury
  • there's swelling, bruising, or tenderness
  • the injured part is difficult to move or hurt when moving, being touched, or bearing weight

What to Do?

  • Remove clothing from the injured area.
  • Apply an ice pack wrapped in cloth.
  • Keep the injured limb in the position you find it.
  • Place a simole splint, if you have one, on the broken area.
  • Get medical care, and don't allow the child to eat in case surgery is required.

Do Not Move The Child and Call 911 Right Away if

  • You suspect a serious injury to the head, neck, or back.
  • A broken bone comes through the skin. While waiting for help:

- Keep the child lying down.

- Do not wash the wound or push in any part that's sticking out

Think Prevention! It's particularly impossible to prevent every fracture - but you can help curb the likelyhood of a break by:

  • using safety gates at bedroom doors and at both the top and bottom of stairs (for babies or toddlers)
  • enforcing helmet and safety gear rules for young athletes and any child riding a bicycle, tricycle, skateboard, scooter, or any type of skates and roller blades
  • avoiding the use of infant walkers

First Aid and Safety Animal Bites

Animal Bites
Animal Bites
Animal bite & scratche that break the skin can sometimes cause infection. Some bites need to be closed with stitches while others heal on their own. Rarely animal bites, particularly from wild animals can lead to rabies, a life threatning disease. Bats, raccoons, skunks, dogs, and foxes transmit most cases of rabies.

What to Do?
  • Wash the bite area with water and soap; apply pressure with sterile gauze or a clean cloth if the bite is bleeding.
  • If the bleeding has stopped, apply antibiotic ointment.
  • Cover the area with a bandare or sterile gauze.
  • Offer the child acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain.

Seek Medicle Care if:
-the bite was from
- a wild or stary animal
- an animal that isn't up-to-date on rabies shots
- an animal that is acting strangley
  • the bite has broken the skin
  • the bite is on the face, head, neck, hand, foot & near a joint
  • a bite or scratch becomes red, swollen, or increasingly painful
  • the child is behind the shots or has not had a tetanus shot within 5 year

When seeking treatment, have the following information:

  • the kind of animal which bite the child
  • date of the animal's last rabies vaccination if known
  • any recent unusual behavior from the animal
  • the animal's location, if known
  • the animal was a stary or wild, or was captured by a local control service
  • the child's immunization record
  • a list of the child's medication allergies

Think Prevention!

Many animal bites can be prevented. Always keep a close eye on young children around animals, even pets. Teach kids not to tease pets, to handle them gently, and to stay away from wild or stary animals.

First Aid and Safety Allergic Reactions

Allergic Reactions
Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions can be triggered by foods, medications, insect stings, pollen, or other substances. Although most allergic reactions aren't serious, severe reactions can be life threatening and require immediate medical attention.

Signs and Symptoms
Mild:
  • itchiness
  • skin redness
  • slight swelling
  • stuffy, running nose
  • sneezing
  • itchy, watery eyes
  • red bumps (hives) anywhere on the body
Severe:
  • swelling of the mouth or tongue
  • difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • wheezing or difficulty in breathing
  • abdominal (belly) pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
  • dizziness or fainting
What to do?
  • contact the doctor if the child has an allergic reaction that is more than mild or concerns you.
  • if the symptoms are mild, give an oral antihistamine such as diphenhydramine.
  • if the symptoms are severe and you have injectable epinephrine (EpiPen), immediately use it as directed and call for emergency medicalhelp.
Think Prevention!
Have kids avoid substances that are known to trigger an allergic reaction. Keep an oral antihistamine such as diphenhydramine available. If the child has a sever allergy, be sure doctor-prescribed injectable epinephrine is kept near by at all times, and that you, the child (if old enough), and any one who cares for the child know how to use it.

Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating
Family Meals
Family meals are a comforting ritual for both parents and kids. Children like the predictability of
of family meals and parents get a chance to catch up with their kids. Kids who take part in regular family meals
are also:
  • more likely to eat fruits, vegetables and grains.
  • less likely to snacks and unhealthy food.
  • less likely to smoke, use marijuana, or drink alcohol.

Teens may turn up their noses at the prospect of a family meal- not surprising bevause they're
busy and want to be more independent. Yet studies find that teens still want their parents' advice and consel, so use mealtime as a chance to reconnect. Also, consider trying thrsr strategies:
  • Allow your teen to invite a friend to dinner.
  • Involve your teen in meal planning and preperatiom.
  • Keep mealtime calm and congenial- no levtures or arguing.

What counts as your family meal? Any time you and your family eat together - whether it's takeout food or a home - cooked meal with all the trimmings. Strive for nutricious food and time when every can be there. This may mean eating dinner a little later to accomodate a child who's at sports practice or other extra cariculler activities. It also mean setting aside time on weekends, such as Sunday brunch, when it may be more convenient to gather as a group.

Advantages of Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding
With numerous guidelines being written on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding, more and more mothers are becoming aware of how beneficial it is to nurse their babies.

Saving your money on formula, breast feeding can also help you to keep your medical bills down. Babies who are been formula fed get sick more often and more seriously than babies that are breast fed.

Breast milk is produced on demand and the best way to increase milk production is to allow the baby to suckle directly from the breast. It is the baby's suckling action that encourages further milk production.
